Timeless Japan
presence and strength of the samurai
The Etoile lamp was inspired by a traditional Samurai hat made of lacquered straw, whose round, pure shape and elegant material I admired.
I like straw because it seems like a "poor" material at first glance, and it is thanks to the know-how of the craftsmen that it suddenly becomes precious.
The Etoile lamp is adorned on its three curved sides with a delicate weave of dyed rye straw which shimmers discreetly between light and shadow.
The pure and timeless elegance of black contrasts with the warm and soft tones of natural oak.
The rounded shapes of the corners bring a particular softness to this sober and characterful lamp which has the presence and strength of a samurai...

A gift from Nature
To create straw marquetry, our workshops use rye straw grown in France.
Each rye stalk is dried, then immerse into a dye bath.
Then you have to split each stem to expose the inner side and flatten it to shape ribbons.
These are the ribbons that will be patiently cut, assembled and glued to obtain the desired pattern.
So what you see is the inside of the straw which is naturally shiny because it is coated with silica.
It is the plant that produces silica to seal the inside of its stem and allow the sap to circulate within it.
Thanks to Mother Nature for this gift that offers us endless decorating possibilities!
